The Stitch Up 2.0 Party

When SurfStitch makes the call for a party – you bet we’ll rock up with a little more than an esky full of cold craft beer! Last November saw the return of the famous Stitch Up event, where we acted as a major drinks partner along with our other local pals, Mr. Consistent.

The night saw over of 300 of Gold Coast’s finest descend upon The Cali Beach Club, located in Surfer’s Paradise.

Burleigh Surf:Craft, a community celebration of the hand-made surfboard at the Burleigh Brewing Taphouse from 3:00pm – 8:30pm. All are welcome to this free event.

Burleigh Surf:Craft will be entertained by Jed Smith and Vaughan Blakey of AIN’T THAT SWELL, and will showcase some Australia’s finest surfboard craftsmanship, live music, Burleigh craft beer, give aways and more. We will bring the community together to talk story, show builds and really make some noise about the proud history of creativity and innovation that defines the Australian surfboard.

Shapers on the day will be in the running for the Burleigh Surf:Craft bursary awards with a combined prize pool of $5,000 for the:

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

And

JUDGES CHOICE AWARD

Winners will take home the renowned Burleigh Golden Growler Trophy filled with world class Burleigh beer!

A massive congratulations to @takedacustoms for taking out Best In Show shape and @byrningspears for winning Best In Show glass work and art on Saturday 6th of April at Burleigh Brewing.

Thank you to everyone who traveled far and wide for this sensational event and all the 21 exhibitors who featured their talent on the day!

For the First time in its history, Burleigh Surf:Craft kicked of at 12pm with a jam packed day of `If Surfboards Could Talk’ with some of the greatest featuring Jack McCoy, Peter Townend, Chris Garret and Dale Wilson.

Guests by the hundreds were encouraged to vote for Best In Show surfboard shape and glass work / art to receive a complimentary Burleigh 28 Pale Ale.

Burleigh received over 750+ votes for the awards which were announced at 6:30pm to winners Yoshi Takeda and Dale Wilson who were both awarded with Golden Growlers and $3,000! The crowd went wild in response. There were some honourable mentions to Rod Morgan and Richard Harvey for their `ahead of their time’ board shapes.

The day wrapped up with unseen footage of `Deeper Shade Of Blue’ and commentary by Jack McCoy and Derek Hynd on the Burleigh Outdoor screen. Could this event get any better!

Each category carries a prize determined by peoples’ choice and judge’s input of $3,000! So make sure you vote on the day! We know how hard it is to make a profit from locally built boards, so this event is our little way of paying tribute to all the talented board builders who do it for the love.

Surf:Craft will also introduce the new `If surfboards could talk‘ segment; a 15-minute talk story every hour with an iconic surfer or shaper. Expect to hear some of the greatest talk about a board that was pivotal in their surfing journey on the hour every hour.

Of course, we are a brewery and that means the world class Burleigh Brewing beers will be flowing from noon, including Taphouse exclusive brews made specially for you!

Yoshiro, or Yoshi as his friends call him, was born and raised in a small army town called Chitose in Hokkaido Island, Japan. He moved over to the Gold Coast around 15 years ago where his passion for surf board shaping began. Yoshi is one of the most humble, creative and talented board shapers in the industry and we are stoked to have his boards on display at the Burleigh Brewing Taphouse for February.

Thank you for being involved in the Burleigh Live Your Passion movement. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Yosh and I am a surfboard builder from Burleigh Heads.

How and when did you first get into board shaping?

My very first shape was over 15 years ago and that was the ugliest surfboard I ever made in my career. Now I shape almost every day and create my version of a masterpiece for other people to enjoy all over Australia and in Japan.

Where did the inspiration come from to create such beautiful and unique surf boards?

Everyday life inspires me to create through playing with different colours, shapes and techniques. What I see and hear everyday influencers my creation in some way. Even drinking coffee or tea at my home; I decided to incorporate a tea bag leaf colour and texture into one of my paints and glassing designs.

How does living on the Gold Coast inspire you to create? 

Definitely the environment where I live is perfect to go for a surf and get some waves before work and the weather is always nice. The surf board industry on the Gold Coast is huge and I wanted to be a part of the industry to improve the experience for surfers.

Who inspires you to create the artwork you do?

Legends all over the world

What do you love most about board shaping? 

It’s not just leading my own satisfaction of making boards but it’s about making people happy and when I see other people frothing on my boards, I feel stoked. It’s rewarding to share my craftmanship to make individual boards for all kinds of individuals. I enjoy working with them to create something unique that both of us love. That’s what I love most about board shaping.

Why do you believe it is so important that others live their passion?

I think people need to find what they love doing and do that and along the way if they can make great things make people happy it’s a win win.

What do you admire about Burleigh Brewing?

I love craft beer and Burleigh Brewing make really good beer! I love everything about the crafts and its cool that they are down the road and we are both creative in our own way making others happy.

The film took place in North Sumatra in Simeulue at Aura Surf Resort and eloquently captures the feeling of how a successful surf trip hinges on the prospect of swell; the sort of anticipation that surfers know all too well.

Locals far and wide flooded the taphouse and all enjoyed the new Burleigh Mid-Tide and Blonde beers while Pequeña Cocina supplied tacos for the hundreds. Matthew Armitage played some great original tunes and the vibe was right as we waited on the sunset to kickstart the outdoor SEEK screening. 

The McTavish crew were slightly nervous looking at the weather radar to see if the forecasted rain would hold off for the feature film. Rain or shine the vibe was strong amongst the 450+ crowd. The McTavish crew introduced the movie and Christian Barker spoke about their trip, the pitfalls they faced filming in a tropical climate and the boards they rode shaped by Ben McTavish. 

12 minutes later, smiles were wide and the cheers were loud. The night was wrapped up with a few giveaways to three lucky winners before the rain had just started to fall, which couldn’t have been timed more perfectly. 

It was a rad event and the first of many planned for the Burleigh Brewing Taphouse in Burleigh Heads. Thanks to all who made it out on hump day.
